Quick Install Guide IP-Capable Smoke Detector

This IP capable smoke detector sensor is suitable for all Didactum IP-based monitoring devices and serves the detection of smoke and fire in interior spaces. An installation of the smoke detector in switch , network, technology and server cabinets is also supported.
On request, several smoke detectors can be connected in series. The maximum cable length can be up to 150 meters.

Installation of the IP-based smoke detector

The smoke detector must be installed correctly. The detection unit must only be installed with the head facing downwards! Otherwise, this sensor can not detect smoke and fire. Please observe the technical specifications of this smoke detection sensor when selecting the installation location.

This IP based smoke sensor must be installed in such a way that there is sufficient air circulation. Furthermore, the smoke inlet openings must never be covered as otherwise no smoke or fire will be detected and reported.

Answers to the most common questions about IP-based Smoke Sensor

Question: Is there a battery in the Didactum smoke detector?
Answer: Since the power is supplied by Didactum`s networked remote monitoring unit, no battery is needed.

Question: How often should a smoke detector be checked?
Answer: We recommend to check a smoke detector every 14 days by simply pressing the test function button with a ballpoint pen.

Question: Can the functionality of the smoke sensor be checked with a glowing cigar / cigarette or with burning paper?
Answer: The sensor smoke may only be tested with an approved test spray (so-called test aerosol for smoke detectors). Smoke particles or nicotine can damage the optical detection unit of the IP-based smoke detector.

Question: Is the optical smoke detector also suitable for rooms with increased air circulation or a high airflow? What about areas with a very high humidity or high dust load?
Answer: In rooms with increased dust concentration, high humidity (RH) or high air circulation, the use of an optical smoke detector is not recommended. Didactum`s thermal fire detector sensor should be installed in the affected rooms.

Question: How will we be informed if the installed smoke detector should fail?
Answer: A disconnect alarm can be defined in the web interface of the networked Didactum remote monitoring device. This will notify you of a technical defect, cable break or sabotage.

Question: I installed the smoke detector in near of a neon tube. When I turn on the lights, I sometimes get a false alarm. What is the reason?
Answer: In general, optical smoke detectors should not be installed in the near of (heavy) power lines or fluorescent lamps. For reasons of electromagnetic interference, please change the installation location of this networked smoke detector.

Question: Our smoke detectors are covered with a light dust layer after many months of use. How can I clean the smoke detectors?
Answer: The inlet openings of the IP sensor smoke should be cleaned with a suitable microfiber cloth. Please do not use a vacuum cleaner as the electronic components of the smoke detector may be affected.

Question: I have triggered the function button of the smoke detector for test purposes. There was no alarm!
Answer: Please check the wiring cable between the smoke detector and networked monitoring unit. If you are using a self-crimped patch cable, please use the RJ11 patch cable included in the scope of delivery of the smoke sensor. The LED of the smoke detector must be illuminated intermittently. A correctly connected IP smoke detector sensor must be displayed in the WebGUI of the Ethernet-enabled Didactum monitoring system! Furthermore, please check the notification and alarm functions stored in the logics of the remote monitoring device.

Question: Can the smoke detector continue to be used after a fire?
Answer: No. The affected smoke detector must be replaced.

Question: When should the installed smoke detector be replaced?
Answer: The electronic components of this SNMP-enabled smoke sensor are subject to aging processes. Therefore, an exchange of the smoke detector should take place no later than 10 years from the date of initial commissioning.

Question: How can I integrate the smoke detectors into our Nagios network monitoring software?
Answer: The manufacturer Didactum offers MIB files and plugins for Nagios and Nagios Forks. These can be found on the English website here. After you have installed the plug-in, you can also monitor this IP-capable sensor under Nagios monitoring software.
